Connect my devices
How to put your own phones, computers and routers on one private network with Connect my devices, who can use it, and what to check once it is on.
Not yet verified on hardware. These steps restate the app's own labels and the published pages for this feature; they were not run on a device for this page.
Connect my devices lets your own devices reach each other by name, wherever they are, with no port forwarding and no router setup. It is separate from connecting to a ForestVPN location, and it never changes how that works. It is off by default on every device, and every part of it stays hidden until you turn it on.
Before you start
- Every plan has it. Connecting devices, your own exits and sharing are on every plan, Free included. What differs between plans is the data allowance.
- You need a ForestVPN account. The app says turning this on requires one. See the account number.
- How many devices. Up to 16 of your devices can be connected at once.
- Per device. You turn it on separately on each device.
Steps
- Open ForestVPN on the device.
- Go to Devices, open This device, and turn on Connect my devices.
- Repeat on each other device you want in the private network. A device joins on its own, and your other devices are told once that it joined. Older apps instead ask you to tap Allow on one of your other devices.
- To reach a device, use its name. Each device gets a name built from its nickname, which you can rename under Devices. The short name works from any of your connected devices, and the full name is on the device's detail screen.
Check it worked
- The device appears in your Devices list with its status, and your other connected devices show it too.
- A second device is told once " joined your devices".
- If a device shows a message about waiting, see trouble with connected devices and waiting for a free device slot.
A name works outside the ForestVPN app only if that device's own Name works outside ForestVPN switch is on. It is off by default.
