Devices and linking

Using one subscription on more than one device, pairing a device with no keyboard, and how to sign a device out or remove it.

Updated October 16, 2026

Every device — a phone, a router, an Apple TV — gets its own permanent key the moment you first open the app or start the container, before you do anything else. That key is what "a device" means here; attaching an account number to it is what lets more than one device share a subscription.

Attaching a second device

  1. On the device that already has your subscription, open Account → Create if you haven't already, and note the number down.
  2. On the second device, open Account → Sign in and type the same number in.

Both devices now see the same subscription. There's no limit on which platform either one is, as long as it's a device ForestVPN actually ships on.

Pairing a device with no keyboard

Apple TV and a router have no practical way to type a 32-character number. Instead:

  1. On the device with no keyboard, choose Pair. It shows a short code.
  2. On a phone or tablet that already has your account number entered, type that code in.

This reads the same as signing in, just started from the other end — the code is a one-time stand-in for the number, used once, to make the same link.

Removing a device

A link can be undone. A device can sign itself out from the Account page in the app, which frees its seat on the account. You can also remove a device from another device on the account — in the app on your phone or computer, or in the console at fvpn.net. Either way Premium stays with the account, and the device that was signed out or removed keeps working on the Free plan, unless it paid for the subscription itself.

An account holds up to ten devices. At ten, choose a device to sign out before you add another. A device that joined in the last 7 days can't remove older devices: do it from one of the older ones. A router can sign itself out, but it can't remove other devices — do that from your phone, computer or the console.

If a device is lost, or you're not sure who has the account number any more, remove the device and then change the account number.

What a linked device can do

A linked device shares the subscription's tier — the same paid plan, or the same free tier. From the app it can see the account's other devices and remove them, within the limits above. If that matters to you — a shared or borrowed device, say — treat the account number like a password: see the account number for what happens if it's lost or shared with the wrong person.
