Backup route: when the direct route is blocked
Some networks block VPNs. When yours does, ForestVPN switches to the backup route on its own so you can still connect. On networks that do not block VPNs it is not used at all.
How it works
- 01
Direct first
ForestVPN connects the normal way first.
- 02
Keep the road that carries data
If the direct route is blocked, it tries the backup route, a road made of ordinary web traffic through a content delivery network, and keeps whichever one actually carries data.
- 03
You are told
The app says it is using the backup route while it is on it, and tells you if it ever has to move you.
What you get
- Connections on networks that block VPN traffic, with nothing for you to turn on.
- The same account, locations and apps.
- A line in your Account screen showing how much of it you have used this month.
Why it has its own allowance
The backup route costs us much more to run than a regular connection, so each plan includes a set amount of it every month. On networks that do not block VPNs it is not used at all.
How much each plan includes
Free includes 1 GB of backup route a month. Premium includes 15 GB.
If it runs out
You can still connect wherever VPNs are not blocked. The direct route keeps working, and the backup route comes back next month. If you need it sooner, the app shows what Premium includes.
Limits and honest caveats
- It is a fallback, not a faster road, which is why it is metered.
- On Free, anything you use on the backup route also counts toward your data allowance.
- It helps where VPN traffic is blocked as such. It cannot help when the whole network is down.

Questions
- Do I have to turn it on?
- No. ForestVPN decides by what actually carries data and switches by itself.
- Is it slower than the direct route?
- It can be. It adds a stop at a content delivery network, which is why it is a fallback.
- Does Free include it?
- Yes. Free includes a monthly amount of backup route, and Premium includes more.
