What the free tier's 2 GB and five connections a day actually mean, and what a subscription changes.

It's per connection, not per day
The 2 GB resets every time you connect, not once a day. Use it up and the tunnel closes on its own; connect again and you have a fresh 2 GB. It's the data carried in both directions while that one connection lasts — browsing, streaming, downloads, everything passes through the same 2 GB.
Five connections, then wait
Reconnecting to refresh the 2 GB counts against the five-a-day limit. Once you've used the day's five, the app tells you so and stops issuing new connections — it doesn't silently fail or connect you at a reduced quality. They come back one at a time rather than all together at midnight: one connection every 4 hours 48 minutes, and the app shows you the wait rather than a date.
Two devices either way
A subscription removes the per-connection cap and the daily connection count; it doesn't change how many devices can share it. What counts as "a device"
A device is identified by a key generated on it the first time the app runs — permanent, and not reset by reinstalling. That's what the two-device limit actually counts, not how many times you've installed the app. The privacy policy explains exactly what that key is and isn't.
