Features
Put ForestVPN on your router
Run ForestVPN on a router and every device behind it goes through it, including the ones that cannot run an app. MikroTik routers are supported today, as a RouterOS container.
How it works
- 01
Install the container
Add ForestVPN to RouterOS as a container with the install script from the download page.
- 02
Link it with a code
The router prints a link code in its log and on its own page. Use it to link the router to your account.
- 03
Choose where the traffic goes
Pick the exit from a page on your local network, and choose whether everything, chosen apps or chosen devices go through the tunnel.
What you get
- Everything behind the router, or only the devices and apps you choose.
- A kill switch on the router, and a routing guide that handles RouterOS fasttrack.
- About 3 MB of memory for the core in the measured run.
OpenWrt routers have a signed package feed and a LuCI app: see the OpenWrt page.
Limits and honest caveats
- The router's CPU is the speed limit. On the two test routers the core moved 122 Mbit/s over a gigabit LAN.
- Use a board with storage that survives a reboot: some small boards lose the container's files when they restart.
- A router is one device on your account.
Where it exists
- MikroTik
Plans
A router signs in like any other device, so it follows your plan.
Questions
- Which routers work?
- MikroTik routers that run RouterOS 7 containers. It was verified on a cAP ax and an RB3011.
- Can I choose which devices use it?
- Yes. You can send everything, chosen apps or only chosen devices through the tunnel.
- Do my phone and laptop still need the app?
- Not while they are behind the router. Away from home they still need it.
