Use ForestVPN from an active desktop session
Use ForestVPN from an active desktop session: what the ForestVPN message ne.permission_denied means, why it appears and what to do about it.
Updated October 11, 2026
The app says: "ForestVPN needs to be used from an active desktop session."
What it means
The system did not grant ForestVPN permission to make a VPN, or the request did not come from a session it reports as interactive.
What to do
Open ForestVPN from the desktop session you are signed in to, or on Linux run it locally with sudo. Do not retry it from the same session.
Why it happens
Some sessions, such as SSH or a service account, are not interactive.
Where you see it
The Windows and Linux apps show this message. The phone and tablet apps do not have this check. The code is ne.permission_denied.
